“Formidable,” to borrow Phil Hughes’ word, is how the New York Yankees‘ rotation appears going into the 2010 American League Championship Series. That would be formidable, one through three.

A.J. Burnett is starting Game 4

The New York Yankees still don’t know who they’ll be playing in the ALCS, they don’t know where they’ll be playing on Friday night, and as of Tuesday afternoon they still didn’t know who will start Games 2 and 3 for them, which means they also don’t know who will start Games 6 and 7.

But they know CC Sabathia is starting Game 1, and they know A.J. Burnett is starting Game 4.If that last sentence made you gasp or gulp or head for the highest ledge, you need to take a deep breath or a swallow and, for god’s sake, close that window now.Because A.J. Burnett is the necessary evil in the Yankees’ ALCS rotation. There is simply no way around him, and really, no better way of going about trying to return to the World Series.

Who is A.J. Burnett,Allan James “A. J.” Burnett (born January 3, 1977, in North Little Rock, Arkansas) is a right-handed Major League Baseball starting pitcher for the New York Yankees. Previously, he played for the Florida Marlins and the Toronto Blue Jays. He was drafted by the New York Mets in the eighth round with the 217th overall pick of 1995 amateur entry draft.

On December 18, 2008, Burnett signed a five year $82.5 million contract with the New York Yankees.On April 9, 2009, Burnett made his debut as a Yankee at Camden Yards in Baltimore. He pitched 5 1/3 innings , giving up seven hits, one walk, while striking out 6. He picked up his and the Yankees first win of the season. He pushed the Yankees record in the season to 1-2. During his second start Burnett went 6 innings of no-hit baseball before giving up 3 straight hits to tie the game. He ended up going 8 innings and getting the win to go 2-0 on the year. On May 12, Burnett made his return to Toronto, where he was loudly booed the entire game.

And now Yanks have no choice but A.J. Burnett for the Game4. I know it is a risk, you know it is a risk and even the GM, Brian Cashman, knows it is a risk, as revealed by his totally unsolicited remark on a conference call Monday afternoon with Yankees beat writers, when he said, “Our fans need to be prepared for a four-man rotation, and that probably includes A.J. Burnett.”He might just as well have said: Bear with us on this, please.

Wiating for the A.J. Burnett play for New York Yankees

A.J. Burnett will start Game 4 of the AL championship series for the New York Yankees on 2 1/2 weeks’ rest.

General manager Brian Cashman said Monday that New York decided against using a three-man rotation against Texas or Tampa Bay, which would have required CC Sabathia, Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes to all start on three days’ rest in the latter part of the best-of-seven series.Cashman said they hope he pitches well for them,they believe in him every time he takes the mound,but he has struggled,no question about it,here in the second half,but that was then ,this is now,he is very competitive person,they believe that competitive nature will allow him to step up and do a great job for them.They look forward to that,butyou can not run away from how he pitched in the second half,he did not pitch well.

In the second season of an $82.5 million, five-year contract, Burnett did not appear against Minnesota in the division series and has not pitched in a game since Oct. 2. He was 10-15 with a 5.26 ERA during the regular season, including 4-13 with a 6.48 ERA over the final four months and 1-7 from Aug. 1 on. Cashman said he is got a very complicated delivery,but when he is on,he is as tough as they come.If the series against the Twins had gone to four games, Sabathia would have started Game 4 on short rest.

Burnett said when told he was being dropped from the first-round rotation. Burnett is not going to cause drama or be the bad apple.At the time, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he appreciated Burnett’s reaction.Girardli said he did not know how he would take it,but they talked about it and he seemed like he is on board,he is going to do whatever he can to help them

New York Yankees,Needing and wanting to win three games?

It’s truly amazing what a three-game winning streak will do for the perception of a team.It was only a week ago today that it seemed just as likely the New York Yankees would bow out of October before Columbus Day as it was they would take us all the way to Halloween, and beyond.

Needing and wanting to win three games in Boston last weekend to wrap up the AL East, the Yankees responded with some of their worst baseball of the season and wound up with the consolation prize of the wild card.The team that looked like a sure 100-game-plus winner in July had staggered to a 95-67 final record. The Yankees played barely above .500 ball after the All-Star break (39-35) and had lost 17 of their last 30 games.

CC Sabathia, of course, was solid but no one was hitting very much, Andy Pettitte’s form had been subpar following two months on the disabled list, A.J. Burnett had been finally, and unavoidably, yanked from the rotation and by the time Phil Hughes got into a playoff game, he would have gone 12 days between starts. Even the incomparable one, Mariano Rivera, had blown two saves in a week down the stretch.

No, things did not look good on Oct. 3, the final day of the regular season.Now, one week and three wins over the Minnesota Twins later, all is well in Yankeeland.The Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay Rays are beating one another’s brains out in the other ALDS. The Rays, like the Yankees, staggered to the finish line, both teams perhaps exhausted by their season-long tussle over control of the division.

And the Yankees now have five full days of rest, recovery and research to prepare for the next phase of their journey.But is all as good as it seems? And is it really that easy, or wise, to act as if three games in October should pull down all the warning flags that were justifiably raised in September?

In the Yankees 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins in Game 2

Oct 7, 2010 – For 37 games, New York Yankee fans have not seen the real Lance Berkman.On Thursday night, in the Yankees 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins in Game 2 of the American League Division Series, pinstripe followers finally saw what many Houston Astros’ fans witnessed for 12 seasons — a funky, yet smooth, left-handed swing that launches stitched leather through night air and into outfield bullpens.

In the top of the fifth inning with New York trailing 1-0, Berkman tied the game by rocketing a solo homer to left-center field.In the top half of the seventh with the game knotted at 2-2, the Big Puma smashed a go-ahead, run-scoring double that scored catcher Jorge Posada. Later in the inning, Berkman scored after captain Derek Jeter hit a run-scoring single that gave the Yankees a 4-2 advantage and helped the Bronx Bombers gain a 2-0 series lead.

When Berkman is on — and many know he hasn’t been for much of this season or last — he’s extremely fun to watch.Pouncing on an outside fastball, one similar to what Carl Pavano threw to him in the fifth inning on Thursday, and uncorking a moon-shot into the outfield seats was the norm in Houston. It happened 326 times.That same lefty swing produced a Houston-franchise best .959 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage). Better than Astros legend Jeff Bagwell.

But the New York faithful haven’t seen that Berkman. They’ve seen an older, less polished, injured version of Berkman who posted just one homer and a .255 batting average as a Yankee.However, for at least one night, Yankee nation got to see how great Berkman was and still can be. It’s also a refreshing reminder that even Fat Elvis — another Berkman nickname in Houston — can entertain an audience and produce a few good shows in the twilight of his career.

A.J. Burnett’s temper has certainly been an issue at times this season – just ask the clubhouse door – but Tuesday he seemed to take the news that he won’t start in the AL division series in stride.

Burnett said after Joe Girardi revealed a three-man rotation of CC Sabathia that it is not surprising when you look at the season he had,Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes.Phil deserves a shot to pitch; he’s had an incredible season. If you look at how the season went, those are our top three starters this season. That’s who should be starting.

Current and former Toronto Blue Jays, as well as baseball legend Hank Aaron and commissioner Bud Selig, sent along messages of gratitude and congratulations to outgoing manager Cito Gaston on Wednesday night.

The Jays held a 35-minute ceremony prior to their game against the New York Yankees, the home finale as manager for Gaston.Fans treated the 66-year-old to at least three separate ovations as he stood beside his wife Linda.Gaston want to thank you fans for the memories,for without you,there would be no memories,he wants you to remeber,they need you again,they need you to come out,support this team and put this team back where it used to be,they want to be in the dugout nect year celebrating.

Joe Carter, Devon White, George Bell and Pat Hentgen were among the former Blue Jays on hand for the ceremony. Gaston spent over a decade in the National League beginning in 1967 with the Atlanta Braves, where, like many other young African-American players, he was mentored by future home run king Aaron.Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker and Atlanta skipper Bobby Cox also appeared in the video tribute. Baker was also a member of the Braves with Gaston and Aaron and played in the minors with Toronto’s manager in the mid-1960s.

His retirement after the current season was announced last winter, and his team has far exceeded expectations, entering Wednesday’s contest with an 81-76 record. Gaston took an all-time mark of 909-850 compiled in two stints as manager into the game.The 66-year-old served as Blue Jays hitting coach from 1982 until he was promoted to manager after the firing of Jimy Williams in 1989.

Gaston was in charge until his dismissal late in the ‘97 season, returning in June 2008 when John Gibbons was fired.The so-called Thank You, Cito night was like a parting gift, although he’ll remain with the club as an adviser for the next four years.It is a lot different because he is leving on his won terms this time,it is not too often you get a chance to go out this way.

The Yankees scratched out three runs in six innings against rookie Kyle Drabek, son of one-time Yankee hurler Doug Drabek. Tuesday night’s win was only the eighth in the last 22 games for the Yankees, whose September slide turned a comfortable lead into tense times as the regular season dwindled down to its final days.Four straight losses against the Rays and Red Sox had dropped the Yankees from 2 1/2 games up in the AL East to second place. They also helped give Boston hope, though the Yankees avoided disaster with a huge win on Sunday night, reducing their magic number for a playoff berth to one.

The Yankees took a quick lead against Drabek in the first, using two singles and an Alex Rodriguez sacrifice fly to score the game’s first run. Mark Teixeira added another run with a sac fly of his own in the third, pushing the lead to two runs.

Brett Gardner tripled with one out in the fifth, then scored on Derek Jeter’s fielder’s choice, somehow sliding safely as the throw from Edwin Encarnacion beat him to the plate.Sabathia took care of the rest.After Snider’s homer in the third, Sabathia retired 11 straight Blue Jays hitters, looking like the Cy Young candidate he has been for most of the season.

Mariano Rivera, the greatest closer of New York Yankees generation and arguably the best of all-time, long-tossing in the outfield under the watchful eye of a pitching coach.It happened about four hours before Monday night’s game between the Yankees and Blue Jays, and it probably happens about as often as Rivera blows three saves in a month, which is practically never.

But it happened this month, the third of which came Sunday night in as close to a must-win game as the Yankees have played all season, and as a result there were Rivera and Dave Eiland working on something that is usually the problem of mere mortals. Namely, mechanics.Rivera said just location,nothing big,it is a process and they are working on it,hand position on the ball,is how Eiland described the subject of Monday’s lesson,when he lets his hand fall to the side of the ball instead of staying on top,sometimes his cutter gets too big,and sometimes it just spins and stays flat,nothing major,he is a human being and sometimes he needs a little tune-up.

Asked jokingly if he was working on a new pitch, perhaps a changeup to go with his lethal cutter, Rivera laughed.Eiland was quick to assure Yankee Nation that Rivera’s problems were mechanical, not physical. “He’s fine, he’s fine,” said Eiland, who insisted he would have no hesitation using Rivera Monday despite his having thrown 29 pitches in a 1 1/3 inning outing in which he not only blew the save but would have taken the loss had his Red Sox counterpart, Jonathan Papelbon, not returned the favor in the bottom of the ninth.

Rivera was less reassuring about his overall physical condition.Problems are in abundance, bumps and bruises and things,but nothing that will affect Rivera.Rivera has suffered from a muscle strain in the left side of his back this year and some knee soreness, injuries that he acknowledged were still there.Nobody can play 162 games and say they’re 100 percent, he said. “Everybody has them and I’m no exception. But everything;s fine. Don’t go trying to find things. Everything is great.

Of even less importance to Eiland was the four stolen bases off Rivera and Jorge Posada by Ryan Kalish and Bill Hall that set up the two Boston runs that gave them a short-lived 3-2 lead.He might have been getting a little predictable,but their main concern was making a good pitch and getting the hitter out,Rivera had an even simpler solution to his problem of holding runners on,do not let anyone get on base.
